Eberhard Wenzel Scholarship for International Public Health

Eberhard Wenzel Scholarship for International Public Health for Australian and International Students

Study Subject: International Public Health
Employer: Griffith University
Level: Research
Scholarship Description: The late Dr Eberhard Wenzel was an academic in the School of Public Health and worked in public health with a range of international health agencies for over 20 years. Dr Wenzel had a tremendous knowledge and understanding of public health issues facing humanity and his establishment of the Virtual Library for Public Health and the International Public Health Watch websites provided important means for him to engage with others who shared his passion for the field.
The objective of this scholarship is to enable students to undertake research which will advance understanding of a public health topic relevant to the academic interests of the late Dr Eberhard Wenzel.
There is one scholarship valued at $2000, for a student enrolled in either full- or part-time study in the Master of Public Health (research option) or an Honours program with the School of Public Health. The intent of the scholarship is to support the thesis component of the student’s honours or masters program of study.

Scholarship Information : Beecroft Fellowships in Theoretical Astrophysics and Cosmology, UK

Study Subject: Theoretical Astrophysics and Cosmology
Employer: University of Oxford, The Department of Physics
Level: Doctoral

Fellowship Description: The Department of Physics invites applications for two Beecroft fellowships (of up to five years). Our theoretical programme includes large-scale structure, galaxy formation, galaxy evolution, cosmic background radiation anisotropy and non-baryonic dark-matter signatures.

The appointments to commence in October 2011 will be as follows: one Beecroft Fellowship will be in early universe physics and particle cosmology with Professor Pedro Ferreira (email: p.ferreira1@physics.ox.ac.uk), Professor Joseph Silk (email: silk@astro.ox.ac.uk) and Dr Joanna Dunkley (email: j.dunkley@physics.ox.ac.uk); and one Beecroft Fellowship in the area of numerical modelling of galaxy formation with Dr Adrianne Slyz (email: slyz@astro.ox.ac.uk), Dr Julien Devriendt (email: jeg@astro.ox.ac.uk) and Professor Joseph Silk.

The successful candidates should have a demonstrated capacity for independent work and be capable of initiating research in a lively group. The Beecroft Institute for Particle Astrophysics (BIPAC) will accommodate the new appointees.

College Scholarship Netherlands PhD Positions on Spectroscopic Analysis of CO2 Capture, Delft University, NL

Study Subject: Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, and Applied Physics

Employer: Delft University of Technology, Mechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineering

Level: PhD

Scholarship Description: CO2 capture and storage (CCS) is one of the leading options for the short-term reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Currently, the CO2 capture step accounts for 75% of the cost of the CCS chain and leads to a significant increase in energy usage. Therefore, more efficient CO2 capture technologies are required. Absorption is the most mature technology for CO2 capture today; however, this process is not yet fully understood. It is a major challenge to separate the effects of mass transfer from chemical reaction kinetics. Therefore, in this project, a Raman-spectrocopy-based set-up will be developed to investigate the equilibrium condition as well as the transient CO2 absorption process. The PhD project will focus on the development of the measurement set-up and measuring cells, as well as the experimental investigation of the absorption process. By incorporating the measurement results, thermodynamics and chemistry, further information about the diffusion process as well as the reaction kinetics should be gained. A significant part of the project is being carried out at the Chair for Technical Thermodynamics (LTT) of Prof. André Bardow (RWTH Aachen University).

Requirements

Applicants should have an MSc in the area of mechanical engineering, chemistry, chemical engineering, or applied physics. Knowledge and experience in the fields of optical measurement techniques would be advantageous. Fluency in English is an additional requirement.

Scholarship Application Deadline: 31-10-2010
